Avis W. Doherty

1947-2018

Avis W. Doherty
Avis Willa Oakes passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2018 at her home in West Glassville. She will be forever missed by her husband Alan, of 44 years as well as children Jeff Doherty (Tammy), Jason Doherty, Annette Doherty (Char), Meg King (Nathan), Ben Doherty (Kate), Paulie Doherty (Madonna), her grandchildren, Karlie, Macey, Lindsay, Kalijha, Kale, Ruby, Cohen, Lily, Zander, Carson, Mattie, Bella, Rae, and great grandchildren Hudson and Willa. She has also left behind brothers and sisters Mike Oakes (Nancy), Troy Oakes (Karen), Sterling Oakes, Debbie Gee (Terry), Jennifer Oakes and brother in-law Eric Hart, as well as other family and friends. She was predeceased by her mother Eva (Ross) and Morley Oakes, her brother Brian, her sister Sandra, and her son Luke.

She was born in Riley Brook on June 28th, 1947. She moved to West Glassville in April of 1974 and raised seven children and one grandchild, but was considered a second mother to many. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was always willing to lend a listening ear and provide advice.

Her talents were appreciated by many. She was a creative artist, and could often be found painting rocks, stones, drift wood, mushrooms, canvases, chairs and anything else she could get her hands on. She also loved making paper maché crafts, creating Halloween costumes, making Christmas crafts and canning food. She was also a seamstress, a gardener, a teacher, and most well known for being an amazing cook. You always knew you could call Avis for a recipe or cooking advice. Day or night, with no need to phone ahead, the door was always open and you would never leave hungry and you most likely would not leave empty handed. She loved to give away her famous pickles and anything else you wanted. She loved having a full house, playing a game of Skipbo and thrived when her kitchen table was full of family, friends and the sound of a guitar filling the room.

The family would like to thank extra-mural for all of their help. A special thanks to nurse Joyce Bourgoin and Dr. Colin Lockhart for their continued care.
Upon her request, there is no wake or funeral service. She was laid to rest at the Glassville United Cemetery on April 19th 2018.
